Whistler council is being asked to support for a Letter of Agreement between the municipality and Emily Carr University of Art + Design in support of the creation of an Emily Carr Summer Satellite Studio to be offered in Whistler.

This will be discussed at the regular council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The report states that the satellite studio could begin as early as July 2014, targetting an enrollment of 20 to 30 teens aged 15 to 18 years old.

The program would be based on Emily Carr’s successful Summer Institute already offered in Vancouver.

The report states: “RMOW staff have been in recent discussions with the Emily Carr University of Art + Design… Building on the recommendations of the Learning and Education Task Force, the Whistler Community Cultural Plan, and the Cultural Tourism Development Strategy, these preliminary discussions have explored the potential for Emily Carr University to offer a two week ‘summer satellite studio’ in Whistler.”

Municipal staff are endorsing the recommendation of Chief Administrative Officer Mike Furey.

The report states that the concept, location and curriculum have already started to take shape: “the current preferred location is the Old Hostel Site on Alta Lake Rd, and the preferred dates are from July 7th through to July 18th.”
