Lather up!

For the first time the Balding for Dollars fund-raising event for cancer research and education takes place in Whistler.

The event will take place on the patio of Garibaldi Lift Company between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on April 6.

As part of ongoing cancer awareness programs over this past month, the annual event takes place in small and large communities throughout B.C. Balding for Dollars was held for the past two years in Squamish.

Participants shave their heads, to raise funds for cancer education and research. Funds raised also go towards family support for cancer victims.

The theme of the event is bald is beautiful, in support of children with cancer.

Huey Tollett and Dave Clark, of Whistler-Blackcomb, are organizers for the event.

Tollett participated in the World’s Greatest Shave for Leukemia, in Australia in 2001.

"It was really wild, I was with two girls from my hostel and they just jumped into the (barber’s) chair and had their heads shaved like it was nothing," says Tollett.

"When I heard about this event I thought I would hopefully get more people to participate, have a laugh or two and raise some money for kids with cancer."

Tollett contacted Clark, who was already in the process of organizing the event.

The two aim to raise $5,000 from local Whistler residents at the event.

Pledge forms can be picked up at IGA, or at the GLC with a minimum $20 donation for your great new look for summer, courtesy of Blackcomb Barber Shop.

Greg Reamsbottom and Doug Craig of the Hairfarmers, due to play apres-ski at GLC, have confirmed they will be both be removing their beards for what Reamsbottom dubs "the Hairfarmers Harvest."

Local lore says Reamsbottom has not shaved his beard off since 1992.

GLC co-manager Mike Verrin, half way to his $5,000 pledge, also says "the handlebars are coming off!"

The community is invited to stop by from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and make a donation or participate in the mass shearing fest, all on behalf of The Children’s Hospital Cancer Department.

Across the province last year close to $45,000 was raised, and organizers this year invite everyone to top the bid.

There will be great prizes for participants including River of the Golden Dreams Canoe Trips from Whistler Outdoor Experience, a Mountain Bike Park Pass from Whistler Blackcomb. Dinners for two at the Delta and at Pemberton Trails Steak House are on offer, as well as ski accessories from Summit Ski.

A golf pass for two will be given away from Nicklaus North, The Chateau Whistler Golf Course and The Whistler Golf Course to the person who brings in the most money from both events in Whistler and Squamish.
