PEMBERTON COWBOY FESTIVAL AND BARN DANCE.

From July 27 to 29 the Pemberton Stables will become home to cowboy poets, musicians, yodellers, storytellers and artisans. Cowboy poet Mike Puhallo of Kamloops and the annual chamber of commerce Barn Dance are part of the fun. Call 894-6984 for information.

BEAR FAMILIES OF WHISTLER.

Black bear researcher Michael Allen continues his slide show series Tuesday, July 31 at 7 p.m. at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. This month’s presentation looks at adult females and cubs-of-the-year; pregnant females and the forecast for 2002; gestation, huckleberries and weight gain; and late summer bear habitat and encounter guidelines. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for children. All proceeds will support black bear research and education.

SUMMER READING CLUB.

The Whistler Public Library’s Summer Reading Club is held on Wednesdays from July 11 to Aug. 15. There is a session for preschoolers from 11 a.m. to noon and two sessions for 5-9 year olds: from 4 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. There will be stories, songs, crafts and a costume party to wind up the club. HELPING HANDS

WHISTLER FISHERIES STEWARDSHIP GROUP —

is planning a series of volunteer action days this summer to restore and enhance fish habitat around the Whistler Valley. Volunteers donate a few hours of their time and learn much about Whistler’s aquatic ecosystem and the animals that depend on them. The Whistler Public Library wants used paperbacks for its huge book sale on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the IGA in Marketplace. Bring your books to the library, 4329 Main Street, before the sale or directly to the sale table on Aug. 4.
