Travelocity competition pits Whistler against Banff

Tourism Whistler is asking residents and visitors alike to go on-line and vote for Whistler in Travelocity's latest competition.

Tourism Whistler is asking residents and visitors alike to go on-line and vote for Whistler in Travelocity's latest competition.

According to Shawna Lang, sales manager for Tourism Whistler, the story behind the competition is that Travelocity's marketing character the Roaming Gnome is deciding whether he should visit Whistler or Banff next week.

The gnome will make a decision based on the number of votes each ski destination receives.

"The benefit for Whistler is that if he comes here next week, he will have his own personal assistant to take photos and write stories for him," said Lang.

"He'll be photographed doing all sorts of Whistler activities like Peak to Peak."

People can vote on Travelocity's gnome page at www.facebook.com/travelocity, as well as on Twitter at Travelocity, Travelocity.ca and the Roaming Gnome.

After the first day of voting, Tuesday, Jan. 12, Whistler had only 14 per cent of the votes. The following day, the numbers had risen to 38 per cent, but Lang is still hoping more people can help bring the gnome to Whistler.

The competition closes Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 9 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, and Travelocity will send the gnome to Whistler or Banff on Friday, Jan. 22 for the weekend.

Travelocity has held previous Roaming Gnome competitions between destinations like Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
