Vail is adding a new 12-passenger gondola, the resort’s 10th detachable quad chair and a massive new base facility for this winter as part of a record $150 million expansion. The expansion plan is committing more dollars to capital improvements than in any other five years combined, according to Vail Associates President Andy Daly. Among the improvements: o Building a $31 million, 83,000 square foot facility at the Golden Peak base area. The building will include restaurants, guest services, ski school operations, ticket sales, rental and retail shops, club facilities, lockers, reserved parking and six luxury condos. o Replacing the Golden Peak double chair with a high-speed detachable quad. o Replacing the existing six-passenger Lionshead gondola with a 12-passenger high-speed gondola. The gondola cabins will be extra roomy and have heating and lighting. o Upgrading restaurant and guest facilities at the Eagle’s Nest. As well, villages at Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead will be developed or expanded. Bachelor Gulch is between Arrowhead and Beaver Creek and is designed to allow skiing from village to village.
