Since June 1 of this year, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative required everyone entering or re-entering the United States to carry a passport, NEXUS card or enhanced driver's licence. Despite advance notice, this policy may have contributed to the 4.1 per cent drop in the number of American visitors, particularly among more causal same-day travelers (-6.7 per cent). However, it should be noted that the volume of visits by U.S. residents has fallen year after year since 2000.
