V.O.P nomination packages ready Sept. 1

While Whistler has two declared mayoralty candidates for the November municipal election,

While Whistler has two declared mayoralty candidates for the November municipal election, potential Pemberton politicians are keeping their plans under wraps. And with the current nomination structure, candidates will not have to disclose their intention to run until Oct. 21, when the V.O.P makes the candidate list public.

That said, nomination packages will be available from the V.O.P offices beginning Sept. 1. In order to run, candidates must be nominated by two qualified electors residing within the Pemberton Village boundaries. (The criteria for what constitutes a qualified elector is included in the package.) The candidate does not have to be a resident, but has to fill out a declaration of candidacy. If the candidate chooses to have an official agent or scrutineer, forms for those positions must also be filled out.

"It sounds like a lot of paperwork, but really it’s not," said Sheena Fraser of V.O.P.

Candidates will be able to file their nomination papers with the V.O.P between Oct. 4 and Oct. 14. At that time, a $100 nomination fee must be submitted. This money is refundable when the candidate submits a financial disclosure within 120 days of the election detailing the extent of his or her campaign expenses. A $30 sign permit fee, accompanied with a $200 deposit is also required. The deposit is retuned when all of the candidate’s campaign signs have been removed.

Those who have second thoughts about running after submitting their nomination forms, will have from Oct. 14 to the morning of Oct. 21. to withdraw.

Council meeting rescheduled
