• Indemnification: The RMOW is fully covered by the Province of B.C. against the costs of the Olympics. There will be no increased property taxes for the games and if there is a surplus B.C. will get 60 per cent for amateur sport.
• 300 acre land bank in the Callaghan Valley or Lower Cheakamus for future resident housing. If the bid is successful the Olympic organizing committee will invest $30 million for an athlete’s village. If the bid is not successful the municipality still gets the land.
• World-wide promotion. An audience of more than 3 billion will tune into Whistler and B.C. to watch the Games.
• New community facilities: If the bid is successful $20 million will be invested in a new facility in Village North or an expansion of the Meadow Park Sports Centre for the Paralympics. The Whistler Conference Centre will get $3 million for the second phase of renovations.
• New athletic facilities include the Nordic Centre in the Callaghan, the Sliding Centre on Blackcomb Mountain, and the athlete centre, an accommodation centre for athletes to allow ongoing training and the hosting of World Cup events.
• Endowment Fund: The federal and provincial governments will set aside a $50 million fund to run the Sliding and Nordic Centres after the Games.
• Partnership Opportunities: development of opportunities with First Nations peoples as well as partnerships with other sporting associations.
• Resort Community Initiatives: The B.C. government is examining the potential for new financial tools – subject to local approval – to enable financial sustainability while allowing B.C. resort communities to compete in the international tourism marketplace.
• Sustainability: All projects will incorporate environmental, economic and social sustainability practices. Whistler’s initiatives will also get global exposure. There is also a commitment to pursue expansion of municipal boundaries in conjunction with key stakeholders.
• Community spirit and pride: A full cultural program built around the Games including performances at award ceremonies, First Nations displays and artistic exhibits in Whistler. There will also be an opportunity to strengthen volunteerism and foster community spirit and pride.
