Whiski Jack Resorts sold to Texas firm One of Whistler's largest and oldest time share management companies has been sold to a major American interest, although the transaction could mean some warm-weather opportunities for local owners. Whiski Jack Resorts Ltd. has been acquired by Raintree Resorts International Inc. of Houston, Texas and Mexico City, for an undisclosed sum. The sale involves all 15 of Whiski Jack's Whistler properties, including Ironwood, the Tyndall Stone Lodge, Whistler Town Plaza and the Lake Placid Lodge. In a release from the new owners, Raintree Resorts chairman Doug Bech said the Whiski Jack purchase will give his company a significant stake in the Pacific Northwest market. The move also supplements the company's August 1997 acquisition of Club Regina Resorts, a Mexican firm which operates time-share resorts in Cancun, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, and is making plans to build or buy further properties in Cozumel and Acapulco. Club Regina's ownership base includes approximately 15,000 people, one-third of whom live in Canada and the Western U.S. Kim Ward, Whiski Jack administrator, said the local operations will retain their current name and no major changes are planned. Ward said the deal is probably of biggest interest to Whiski Jack's own pool of 5,000 owners, who will now have the opportunity to use their time-share allotments in the sunny south. Whiski Jack was formed in 1979 and currently employs 175 staff in Whistler. The firm has two local offices and is based out of North Vancouver. The company recently acquired six units at the Intercontinental Cascades Hotel and work is under way to land an additional 44 Cascade units and as many as 50 units in the Westin Hotel, still under construction.
