Whistler took to the streets Saturday, May 3 for the resort's 25th annual Pitch-In Day, with dozens of volunteers from local community organizations lending a hand to clean up roadside ditches from Emerald to Function Junction.
This year, volunteers from the Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Whistler Youth Soccer Club, the Rotary Club, Whistler Skating Club, Whistler Taekwondo, Whistler Gymnastics Club, Pemberton Young Life, the Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment, the RMOW Village Hosts, Whistler Waldorf School and Spring Creek Elementary all took part, focusing on subdivision roads and raising awareness of littering in the resort. Municipal roads staff removed trash bags and sorted recyclables.
Last year, 150 volunteers collected 1.5 metric tonnes of litter on Pitch-In Day.
Pitch-In participants were also treated to a barbecue hosted by the Whistler Fire Fighters Association, with food and drinks donated by Whistler's grocery stores. The event was sponsored by Pitch-In Canada, an organization dedicated to preserving natural ecosystems in communities across the country.
