We love this photo of Bonny Makarewicz taken in 2006. Makarewicz lost her private and courageous fight to cancer March 27.

Long-time Whistler photographer Bonny Makarewicz passed away yesterday, March 27, succumbing to a cancer she has been fighting privately and courageously for months.

Makarewicz has been a photojournalist for more than two decades, documenting not just Whistler’s growth and personality, but also its sports heroes and celebrities, and those who come to work and play at the resort.

Her images appeared regularly across North America and Europe, and in the New York Times, The Globe and Mail the Vancouver Sun the Province, and, of course, in the Pique and Question newspapers.

She also captured the spirit of the community in her portrait shots and her commercial photography — from royalty to world-class skiing and snowboarding. Everyone in Whistler was touched by her art and her generous and cheeky spirit.

Makarewicz won numerous national and provincial awards — you can see her creativity at work at www.bonmakphoto.com.

Whistler Blackcomb honoured Makarewicz today by posting one of the many shots she took for them on its home page www.whistlerblackcomb.com.

When she wasn't shooting, or sharing her craft with those in need of help, she was on the ski hill, in the backcountry or, in summer, on her bike — often with Biggles, her Jack Russell at her side.

Our condolences go to her husband, her family and friends and all those who knew and loved her.
